Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil

I’ve worked at a lot of places over the years, one of those jobs was working at a health food store. I loved working there. I learned more about healthy living there, than anywhere else. One of the products that people most often talked about was Coconut Oil.  I never tried using it before but was always intrigued by what people were saying.

Curious as I was I never tried it until  recently, when the opportunity to review the Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil came up. I wasn’t sure what to expect or what to do with it.

Homemade Fries

The Coconut Oil arrived safely.  It was well packed using environmentally friendly packaging.  When I opened it, I was surprised to discover that it was solid.  The Coconut oil reminded me of shortening only it smelled so much better!

So now that I had it, the question was…what do I do with it?  The first thing I did was try making some homemade fries.  They were delicious.  The coconut oil made them slightly sweeter than what we are accustomed to.

Homemade Bread

The next thing I tried cooking was bread.  Normally I use olive oil in this recipe but I swapped it out for the coconut oil and we could taste the difference right away.

The bread had a sweet flavour to it.  My husband usually spreads jam and peanut button onto his bread slice eats this stuff just plain…not even adding any butter.

We both tried to describe the flavour of the bread but we can’t quite seem to come up with any other words but Yum!

Tomorrow I hope to make it to the store to buy some mini-muffin tins to try making some peanut butter cups.  I was very pleased with the oil and how simple it is to use.  I do find I have to be a little bit careful and not get carried away when I am putting it into my recipes since it can make my food a little to sweet.

It does cost more than the extra virgin olive oil I currently use, but it does give my sweets (and fries) and extra little bit of “love” that I do enjoy.  I receive the email newsletter from Tropical Traditions and they frequently have sales which makes it more affordable to those of us on a budget.
