“Welcome to Fireside, Texas – Where no strangers are known! Home of the free and the brave, and the everlasting polite person. We never take the last cookie. No one eats beets, but we thank the hostess for them, anyway. Population: eight hundred forty-seven. Climate: cheerful and cozy. Main industry: minding our children and our neighbours business.” (page 7 “When We Last Spoke”)
I live in a place similar to this. Everyone knows everyone and when you need a helping hand there is always one, two or three offered. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. “When We Last Spoke” brings to life a small southern town where you are never a stranger for long.
“When We Last Spoke” by Marci Henna, tells the tale of two sisters, Juliet and Evangeline. The girls were raised by their grandparents, Walt and Ruby, after their mother leaves them to follow her dreams in New York City after their father dies in the war. Walt and Ruby love the girls and do their best to protect and raise them, but they can never erase those feelings of abandonment. A rift tears the girls apart and only after the death of their grandparents do they being to find each other again. As the girls spend time in Fireside, Juliet hopes that healing memories will smooth the rough roads ahead.
“When We Last Spoke” is a touching story that will pull at your heart strings. Ms. Henna will transport you to a another time and place through her very descriptive storytelling. She will make you feel a full range of emotions from tears to laughter. She shares in vivid detail the characters memories and personalities to the point where you feel like you are really there, sharing in the moment.
The book is full of down home folksy sayings. I have mixed feelings about this. Without them I feel that the book would loose a little of it’s “small town” feel, but at the same time I found it detracted a bit from the story for me.
“When We Last Spoke” will bring to mind how each experience in our lives, helps to make us who we are today. We each have a choice to make, do we let those experiences makes us bitter or better?
“When We Last Spoke” is a book to be read with your feet up, a mug of hot chocolate in your hand and fire fire in the fireplace.
The eBook will be available for FREE on Amazon.com from Feb 20-24, 2017!
