Assemble Your Very Own Craft Kit

CraftBoxAs a family, there is nothing we love more than getting stuck into some crafty project. This is particularly appropriate at this time of year. The truth is whatever the season my kids will happily sit down and stick, glue and color to their hearts content. Instead of having to look all over the place for bits and pieces I decided to make up a dedicated craft kit. I think I’ve got just about everything I need in it, but if you have some suggestions, please feel free to add them. Some of these are more ‘hands on’ suggestions than others. And some are definitely for supervised use only!

Scissors

I don’t know where we’d be without them. Sometimes I just don’t know where they go at all. I’ve lost count of the amount of pairs I have lost over the years. And it’s never the ones that don’t cut anything that disappear. You can get regular scissors, of course, but for small delicate hands, try junior varieties. Plastic handle scissors work well, and rounded tips are a must. I do like scissors that cut, however! Get a few pairs, at least, and bright colours can help you locate them easily.

Glue Gun

What did we do before these amazingly useful tools came along? The perils of trying to glue stuff together without success are over. Grab glue guns from Glue Guns Direct and you’ll be hot glueing the house back together. Definitely a supervision required item, but a ‘must’ in any craft box

Stapler or staple gun

There are times when nothing else will do. Not a pin, not a clip. It’s a staple moment. Make sure you get a good quality one and plenty of staples to keep you supplied. Staple guns are the stronger and harder working version. These are brilliant for upholstery and even come in useful for some DIY projects. A good quality hardwearing one will last a lifetime.

Pliers and tweezers

These are just useful for those moments when you need to pull wires together. They’ll reach in and grab anything that is too small and fiddly. They will hold something even smaller, still, so you can get on with the job in hand.

Hacksaw

The kind with the tiny teeth that will saw just through just about anything. They are also good for cutting through delicate and not so delicate bamboo. The small teeth get a great grip and don’t tend to split edges as they cut.

Small Hammer

A delicate version of its bigger brother. Great for tapping in picture hooks and tasks that come along with framing your prize pictures

Yarn or Twine

Need we say more? You probably already have some in the kitchen or tool shed, but I don’t think you can ever really have enough.

Collect these items together and you’ll have the basis of a good quality craft kit. You can add anything you like to this. Files are always useful; round and square. Sanding paper is a must have, as is a whole range of thinners and painting materials, such as brushes and felt markers.

And you want to make sure you have anything you need to help with a clean up.

It’s great to keep all this hardware together, and one brilliant solution is a good sturdy fishing tackle box. And you might just think about keeping a latch or lock on it, just in case small fingers are searching!

iStencils.com – Review

iStencil

StencilI love to watch home improvement shows, especially the ones where they up-cycle old furniture into something utterly fantastic.  I have always wanted to try to do something myself and with the help of iStencils I did just that.  I purchased an old chair and started my up-cycle.

The most difficult part of the whole process was choosing which stencil I wanted. The iStencils collection of stencils includes over 2,600 designs.  The stencils come in a variety of sizes ranging from 5×5 inches up to 36×36 inches. The stencils are laser cut from durable, highly flexible 7 mil mylar.  I was able to use them over again which is great since I wanted to practice a little bit first.

Never having done anything like this before, I was excited to try out the stencils, but first I had to prep my chair.  We sanded and painted and then painted again.  Now were were ready for the stencils.   I sprayed a little bit of temporary adhesive to the back of my stencil and attached it to my chair.  I covered the rest of the chair with an old tablecloth and tape, grabbed my can of red spray paint and went to work.

The stencil worked like a charm.  The only spot that I had a bit of trouble was on one web where I didn’t have it pressed down quite enough and had a bit of paint bleed.  That was totally my fault for not checking my work before I started. The stencil peeled off and I was left with a crisp and clear spider and web on my chair. Something that is so much better than anything I could have free-hand drawn.

Cleaning the stencil is easy. I simply wiped it clean with nail polish remover.

I loved using the stencil. They sent me another stencil with more spiders and a larger web that I plan on using on an old school desk for my son’s room. Only this time I’ll use glow in the dark paint. The possibilities are endless. With so many designs you are really only limited by your own imagination…iStencils helps you add an element of fun or charm to any project. So simple to use that even a beginner like me can use them with great results.

CHICKENS! – KellyNeedlearts Review

Easter is coming up!  It seems like only yesterday it was Christmas.  While we don’t go all out with gifts at Easter time we do like to celebrate by giving our children a few small gifts, but what do you get for the children who have everything?

The answer is easy!  CHICKENS! and yes, you do have to yell a little bit when you say it.  Once you see them you’ll understand…as soon as you pick them up you just feel the need to shout it!

Kelly from KellyNeedlearts has sewn, with love, these adorable chickens for my kids.  They just aren’t for Easter they are perfect for any time of year.  Mine are made with high quality Easter fabric.  I love how the fabric opened up a story time opportunity.  While we were looking at the colours and designs on the fabric I was able to explain to her a little bit about the story of Easter using the designs on the fabric.

Chickens

The chickens have embroidered eyes and sweet little felt beaks.  They are so soft.  Perfect for my son to throw them around (usually at his sister).  I’m not worried about anyone getting hurt.  With the weather being so cold outside, sometimes we get a little rowdy in doors.

They are perfect for taking places.  Each one is slightly different, but similar enough that my kids don’t fight over them.  If they get dirty, I can toss them into the washer.

They look very sweet sitting in a basket or just setting them on a shelf.  They are a constant source of entertainment and conversation.  We play a game where we sit down and toss the chickens at each other and tell chicken jokes.  My daughter’s favourite is…

Question: “How do chicken’s dance?”
Answer: Chick to Chick.

Chickens hopscotchThe best feature of these chickens is that they encourage creative play!  They don’t squeak or squawk, so it is up to you to make your own fun with them.

My kids have found a variety of ways to play with them.  My daughters all time favourite is using them as “stones” in hopscotch!  We created a hopscotch board on the floor and have played for hours.
