My Laundry Revelation

Window Cleaning

Window CleaningThe sun was shining and it was a beautiful Thanksgiving day and hubby decided to take the kids outside.  I took the opportunity to catch up on some of the chores in the house that I have been neglecting.   It seemed like I had been washing, drying and folding laundry all day and just as I was starting to feel grumpy (and maybe a little sorry for myself, missing out on the sunny weather to do laundry).  I walked into the bedroom to put away some more clothes and looked out the window and there was my daughter washing the window.

She had the biggest smile on her face as she cleaned the window.  She would spray the cleaner and then grab a wad of paper towel to clean it, smiling and laughing the whole time.  Not once was it work to her.  It was simply something good that she could do for Mommy and Daddy to show us that she loves us.  And it got me thinking…

When did housework become a chore?  When we are three, it’s all about helping Mom and Dad.  It’s a way we say “I Love You!”.  As an adult it becomes a chore.  Something we do, not because we want to but because we have to.  For me it’s something I do either without much thought…or with “bad” thoughts because I just really don’t want to do it!  I started to wonder, what if I thought of these “chores” as a way of telling my family, “I Love You”?  What if instead of doing them mindlessly, I focused on doing them will a touch of joy?  Would it make a difference at all?

So I set about my day of chores in a whole new light…I folded my laundry in the bedroom while I watched my daughter clean the window and enjoyed every moment of it.  I scrubbed the toilet and shower while thinking about everything I have to be thankful for.

Everything in my life may not be perfect, but today I discovered something that will remain with me forever.  Housework isn’t a chore it’s a way to say, “I Love You” to the people in your life who mean the most to you!
