Say & Pray Devotions – First Words, Devotions, and Prayers

My children love reading. For as long as they can remember, we have been reading aloud together. Now that they are in school, they are starting to read more and more on their own which makes those moments reading together even more special. It’s never to early to start creating those special memories of reading with you. “Say & Pray Devotions – first words, Devotions, and Prayer” is a perfect first book to share with your little one and create a memory that will last a lifetime.

“Say & Pray Devotions – first words, Devotions, and Prayer” Dian Stortz, is a devotional for little children. The devotional encourages little minds to explore new words all the while helping them grow in their faith. Each devotion shares the message of God’s love and helps your little one learn and follow Bible truths.

“Say & Pray Devotions – first words, Devotions, and Prayer” is a board book that is the perfect size for little hands. The pages bend easily in small hands and could stand to be a bit thicker. The illustrations are full colour and full of details that will have your child exploring each page.

The book is divided into three sections, “God’s World”, “God’s Gifts” and “God’s Love”. Each section explores what God wants to share with us. Each devotion spans two pages and contains a short devotional of two or three lines, a great length to capture a little ones mind and heart. It is followed by a short scripture verse and prayer. Your child will love to point out and talk about the labeled objects on each page. Each word helps your child discover something wonderful that God wants to share with us.

“Say & Pray Devotions – first words, Devotions, and Prayer” is so much more than a “simple book”. It’s a book that encourages you to spend time beyond reading the words of the book. As you explore each page with your child, you will find yourself sharing special moments that neither of you will forget. With the help of the pictures, you can share how God loves each of us in your own words.

“Say & Pray Devotions – first words, Devotions, and Prayer” is a great book to share with your little one to help them grow in their faith. It would make a perfect gift for a baby shower or first birthday.

Baby Baby

Reading together with your child creates memories that last a lifetime. I can still remember sitting by my grandmother, as she sat in her rocking chair by the window, reading “Scat Scat Little Cat”. I don’t remember much of the story, but I remember the time that I spent with my Grandmother and she meant the world to me. I hope to create these special memories with my children by reading to them every chance we get! “Baby, Baby!” is a book that you can read with your tiniest little one and start creating those special moments of your own.

babybaby

“Baby, Baby!” by Diane Stortz is a short rhyming poem about those every day events, a giggle, a nap and even a sneeze, that happen in each baby’s life. Each moment of their day is full of wonder, and this story is a celebration of those everyday moments and ends with a reminder of the biggest wonder of all…that we are ALWAYS loved by God.

The message of the story is important for everyone to know. No matter what we do, we are always loved by God. We don’t have to do anything “extraordinary” to receive His love, He loves us just for who we are!

The illustrations are simple, showing a baby doing various every day tasks. I love that it repeats the word Baby. When my children were tiny, they loved anything to do with other babies (and still do).  Each activity that the baby does in the story is something that most little ones do every day. As you are reading the book with your baby, have your baby clap and smile and of course be totally selfish and take advantage of kisses and cuddles!

Most babies love to look at themselves in the mirror, which is what makes the last two pages of this book very special.  The text simply says, “Who does God Love? God loves ________.” Your child is able to see his own face in the mirror and know that we are talking about him, not some random character in a story.

The book is incredibly sturdy. We had read the book in the car, and it landed on the floor. I love putting board books through tough tests by putting them through everyday situations that kids will put them through, so I left it there for a little over a week. It was stepped over and on and things were dropped on it. The book is still in great condition. You can see a few marks on the cover, but that’s it. The pages didn’t bend or crease. The mirror is excellent, showing your child’s face clearly with very little distortion that is found in lesser quality books.

Is there a message to be found in here for Mom and Dad? Sure there is. One page reads, “Baby reaches. Baby hides.” It made me think of how often we reach for things we shouldn’t and then spend time hiding from ourselves and from God. Perhaps it’s a reach, but it reminds me that God not only loves my baby, He love ME too!

“Baby,

Baby!” is a fun book that is perfect for sharing with your little one! For more information visit their Amazon.com page!

My Mother’s Quilts: Devotions of Love, Legacy, Family and Faith

MyMothersQuiltsThere is something comforting about a quilt. No matter how your day has gone, you can always snuggle under a quilt and know that you are being surrounded by the love.  Whenever someone makes a quilt, a little bit of love is always put into every stitch.

“My Mother’s Quilts” by Ramona Richards is a book of short devotionals that have been inspired by thirty family heirloom quilts.

Each devotional begins with scripture quote. The author has chosen to use different translations for these quotes. I like this change from the norm, it gives me the opportunity to explore other translations other than the NIV that I’m accustomed to. She uses quotes from the New American Standard Bible, The Message, English Standard Version, King James Version and others.

The devotionals also include the name and a full colour image of the quilt. The author shares beautiful stories from her family’s history . Each story is told from the heart with no pomp and circumstance. None of the stories are spectacular in their own right, but the authors shows us how God has shown his love for us in simple everyday acts.

Each devotional ends with a “Prayer Starter”. Sometimes we get stuck in our prayer lives, these starters help focus the direction of your prayers.

This devotional has changed how I look at quilts (and other hand-crafts). As the pieces of these quilts are different, I can see that God has made each one of us unique too.  Even though the patterns may be the same, each one still has it’s own story to tell.  Our mothers grandmothers stitched each quilt with much love and faith that reminds me of the love and concern that God has for us.

The quilts in this book take me back the days when my mother and grandmother stitched these patterns. Three of the patterns have special meaning to me – The Rosette, Dutch Doll and the Log Cabin. As I was reading each devotional I was transported back in time through my own memories of these quilts. Just like Ms Richards family, my own mother and grandmother carefully chose each patterns and stitched each quilt with love. Each quilt portrayed something important that they wanted to pass on to future generations – the love that God has for each one of us.

Under The Sea Holy Bible

UnderTheSeaMemorizing Bible verses is something that I did as a child, and it’s something that my children are now doing.  I remember struggling through the King James Version (KJV) and finally learning them from the New International Version (NIV).  I was thrilled to learn about the New International Reader’s Version which is based on the NIV.

“Under The Sea Holy Bible” is ZonderKidz latest edition of the Bible for you younger readers. This Bible contains the complete text from – Genesis to Revelation and is the New International Readers Version.  It is geared to children between the ages of 6-10. It has a beautifully illustrated hard cover.  The fish and sparkles make it attractive to children.

I am not familiar with the NIrV version of the Bible, but I have grown up with the NIV.  The NIrV is based on the NIV Bible and uses that text where it could.  When the words in the NIV were to long or difficult to understand they used shorter and more easily understood words which is helpful to younger readers.

The text changes can be seen in John 3:16.
The NIV version reads as:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

The NIrV reads as:

God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.
Anyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life.

John 3:16

None of the meaning of the verse has been lost, but you can see that it is broken down into shorter sentences and easier vocabulary.  This makes it easier to understand and remember.

“Under The Sea Holy Bible” has a wonderful hardcover which makes it sturdy to carry around, but I find the pages very thin.  You can actually see the text on the reverse side of the page.  I do have my concerns about how well the pages would stand up to younger children or for people who like to highlight special passages.

Each chapter is divided into shorter sections with clear titles.  They have also done things like removed the word “Selah” from the Psalms as the Hebrew meaning of this word isn’t clear.  I am not a Biblical scholar so I can not say how this change affects the meaning of the text.  For my children at their ages, the removal of this world helps make the Psalms easier to read and understand. Sometimes the writers of the Bible have used more than one name for the same person or place, the NIrV version uses the most familiar name everywhere it would appear.

The Bible has a few special colour pages that are appealing for younger children.  They cover topics like the Books of the Bible, Prayer is…, The Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments for Kids. The Back of the Bible contains a Dictionary and an index of Great Bible Stories.

Since this is a Bible children or new readers I would have like to see a reference at the beginning of each Book of the Bible explaining the “Who, What, When, Where and Why” that I have found in other versions.

“Under The Sea Holy Bible” wouldn’t be my first choice as a Bible for my children as it lacks some of the extra study guides that I have become accustomed to.  I would still keep it on my shelf though as it would be my choice of Bible to use in conjunction with our devotionals because of it’s simpler text.

Jesus Today: Devotions for Kids – Review and Giveaway

JesusTodayHave you ever wondered what Jesus would say to you if He were sitting right beside you?  Would He say He loves you?  Would He offer advice on day to day situations?

“Jesus Today: Devotions for Kids” by Sarah Young, is a devotional for children. Each devotion is based on Scripture and is written as though Jesus is speaking directly to you.  The devotional reminds us that He is in control and that amazing things await everyone who puts their faith and hope in Him.

The book is aimed at children ages 6 through 10.  I feel that 6 may be a little young.  I read through several of the devotions with my daughter, but they just didn’t hold her attention. She found them hard to follow and I found myself changing the word “Me” to “Jesus”.

I really like how each devotion ends with multiple scripture verses. It helps your child explore the entire Bible, Old and New Testaments in bite size pieces that are easier for them to comprehend. By choosing related scriptures from various parts of the Bible, it shows your little one how God’s promises are consistent from beginning of the Bible until the end.

The back of the book contains a “Scripture Index”.  If you are looking for a specific scripture you can check here to see if it’s in the devotional. I personally would have loved to see an additional “Index by Topic”.  I think this would make it easier for younger children to find devotionals, when they need them most.

The book is very consistent in it’s layout.  Each devotional follows the same pattern, Number, Title, Devotion and Scripture.  The font is easy to read and each devotion only takes a few minutes to read.  There is also a ribbon bookmark to help keep track of where you are.

“Jesus Today: Devotions for Kids” is a book that you could read several times over and find something new each time.  It’s a great way to end the day with your child, talking about the promises that are laid out in the Bible for each and every one of us.

Teething Bling Giveaway and Review

Teething Bling Review and Giveaway

Teething BlingI was so lucky to snag myself some Teething Bling.  I was wandering around facebook on day like everyone does and found a giveaway for something called Teething Bling from http://www.smartmomjewelry.com/.  I didn’t know exactly what it was, so I took a look on their website and found that it was beautiful jewelery designed just for moms like you and me.  I entered the giveaway and was lucky enough to win!

It didn’t take long for my “Bling” to arrive.  I chose the bronze medallion. I still wasn’t sure what to expect and was so thrilled with the product when it arrived.  It looked exactly like it did in the picture, there were no surprises there.  The big surprise was how I fell in love it with right away. The pendant is beautiful.  I wear it daily.  I don’t have to worry about breaking it or getting it dirty.  My son and daughter can tug, pull and chew on it all day long and it looks just as wonderful as it did the day I bought it.  It’s so easy to clean if…when it get dirty.  I love that it’s so wearable for everyday and that I can dress it up too.  We all have those “mommy days” where we just haven’t had time to brush our hair and this jewelery just makes you feel a pretty even on those days.

Teething Bling In ActionI wear my Teething Bling all the time.  It comes in handy when the little ones get restless when we go out.  More often than not I forget the soother for my youngest and I can just pop this into his mouth and will chew on it til the cows come home.  My daughter loves to wear it too, although with her imagination it has been a fishing pole and numerous other things. I was just exploring their website and found that they have tween bling.  My daughter simply adores the heart shaped pendant.  I think this is fantastic since Little Zee can be very hard on Jewelery, this is stuff that I don’t have to worry about.  An unexpected use for me is during those moments when Mommy needs to count to 10, it works fantastic as a little squeeze ball to relieve a little stress.  I just can’t say enough good about this product!

If you haven’t already gone over to their website, I highly recommend that you take a few minutes to browse their site: http://www.smartmomjewelry.com/ The quality of their product is very high and the prices are so reasonable that you’ll want to buy one for yourself and one for a friend!  My only complaint…I don’t have two!
