I love to read. I love escaping my reality for just a little bit and slipping into the world that the author has created. Each night, I take some time to read to my daughter before bed. We curl up with a “new favourite” book and read…”Just one more chapter? Please, Mom!” can often be heard coming from her room. She can’t wait to start reading on her own so she can read that next chapter herself!
My daughter started attending pre-school 3 days a week and is learning her letter sounds. I’m always looking for ways to extend her learning here at home. I was excited when I was given the opportunity to review the “Letter Sounds – Rock ‘N Learn” DVD.
The DVD is bright and colourful and the animations are lots of fun. My daughter loves that the music isn’t “Baby Music”, (“Mom! I’m four years old now, I don’t like that baby stuff anymore!” Where does the time go?)
The DVD approaches learning the letter sounds in various ways. It does something very unique that I haven’t seen on other programs. Whey they are going over the letter sounds, there is a mouth in the corner of the screen. It shows the kids how their lips should be moving when pronouncing the letters. They designers of the program have blocked off all the other distracting facial features so that your child can just focus on the lips.
The DVD explores learning in a variety of ways. Starting off with a review of the upper and lower case letters it then builds on that knowledge. It then focuses on teaching the most common sounds each letter makes then gradually moves on to more complex learning. By the end of the movie my daughter was attempting to read some silly sentences using sight words.
The DVD is very well thought out. It uses relevant animations to help your child learn. They show both the upper and lower case letters in easily recognizable fonts. The timing of each section is also great. With just enough repetition and time between each new letter or concept. It keeps both of my children from getting bored.
Even though the “Letter Sounds” is geared toward children ages 4-7 my two year old also loves it. It’s so hard to find educational DVD’s that are able to entertain both of my kids. As the learning grows more complex his attention does drift a little, but that can only be expected. He’s not the type of kid to sit still for very long! My daughter who is four, is totally engrossed and entertained throughout the whole movie. You can see her excitement grow as she discovers more and more things. Each time she watches the movie she learns something new and re-enforces old concepts.
Here are my daughters thoughts on “Letter Sounds”.
