Alessia Moves House

AlessiaMovesHouseChange can be scary. I’ve lived in the same area my entire life, my children will attend all the same schools I went to as a child. To me, Home is a particular 100 acres of land, that I know like the back of my hand…probably even better! I can’t imagine moving away.

“Alessia Moves House” is the story of a little girl, who is about to embark on her biggest journey in her life! She is moving to a new house. While she is excited to be getting her own room, something is bothering her.  Could it be that she’s leaving the only home she’s ever known? Or that she’s leaving behind her friends?

“Alessia Moves House” would be perfect to read to any little one that may be moving to a new home. The author, Lou Silluzio, shares a story about the emotions and challenges that go along with moving.

After reading the story is the perfect time to talk to your children about sharing their feelings when they are worried, nervous or afraid. Alessia was scared of moving, but she didn’t want to be left out so she kept those feelings bottles up inside until they “exploded”. The kids and I chatted about how it’s important to share with Mom and/or Dad about how a new move, changing schools or any other big life change is making them feel.

The story also reminded me of how important it is for me to to ask my children how they may be feeling. It’s all to easy to forget that our children are still small and don’t always see things in the same perspective as we do. Little imaginations can dream up of all kinds of scenarios and it’s important to talk to them about what will happen  and things we can do to make the transition easier when a big change is about to happen.

“Alessia Moves House” has bright colourful illustrations that capture your child’s attention. There were some regional differences in the text. Words like “removalist” and “cubby house” puzzled my children, but the illustrations helped them figure it out on their own.

“Alessia Moves House” is a great story to share with any child who may be about to experience the excitement and fear of moving to a new home.
