Wilbur is a little red lawn tractor who lives with his best friend Farmer Jim. As Wilbur ages Farmer Jim is concerned for Wilbur’s safety as he works in the field and begins to look for a new home for Wilbur. Will Farmer Jim be able to find the perfect home for Wilbur?
I like how this story deals with ways to handle big changes that happen in our lives. Farmer Jim is always willing to listen to how Wilbur feels about his new potential owners. It is a great reminder that we need to pause for a moment and listen to those around us when we are making decisions that ultimately also affect them.
I love the secret signal that Wilbur and Jim use to communicate with each other. Although we use them for a different reason, my children and I have set of signals we use as well.
Farmer Jim takes excellent care of Wilbur. He cleans him and ensures that he is stored properly at night. Use this time to have a discussion about equipment safety with your little ones.
The end of the story has discussion questions and answers. These are great to have during read alouds and encourage little thinkers to dig deeper into the story.
